Abstract

During the pandemic, brick-and-mortar retail stores closed their doors, many indefinitely. During this time, the future of brick-and-mortar retail became a popular topic of discussion, as online shopping soared and companies rapidly built out their e-commerce storefronts. Through my research, it became apparent that consumers were already tired of the current shopping experience, finding it tiring, overwhelming, and lack-luster, and this pause in in-store shopping presented both an opportunity and a necessity to re-imagine these experiences when it came time to welcome customers back through the doors. For my undergraduate thesis, I chose to apply my interaction and experiential design skills to this problem, investigating how immersive yet tactile technologies could be leveraged in order to elevate brand storytelling and increase customer engagement and trust.
